I haven’t yet listened to the podcast, but I took a moment to look over the Giffords information sheet.

I have indeed noticed that muzzleloaders are exempt from any Federal law. I couldn’t help but notice a couple of other things, though: that there are muzzle-loading revolvers that are also exempt, that any lever action gun made before 1896 is also exempt (so the difference between a rifle that requires a background check and for which mail-order is forbidden, and one that could be bought online and mailed to you, is a *serial number*), and that Gatling guns are also exempt.

And do you know what else I’ve noticed? A lack of *crime* using these firearms. I can’t help but wonder: if the Brady Background Check is so successful at keeping the guns out of felons and gang members, then why don’t they just buy pre-1896 weapons via mail order? I think the answer is that even with all the regulations, it’s just as easy to buy semi-auto weapons, and for all sorts of reasons, these are simply better to use.

From this line of reasoning, I have come to the politically untenable conclusion that we should just scrap gun background checks altogether. They are useless, and have proven to be an expensive boondoggle.

(Between this, and the facts that (1) any felon determined to get a weapon can get one, and (2) there’s a surprising number on non-violent felonies, and they are only growing, and (3) even without guns, violent people can do a lot of harm, I have also concluded that anyone who isn’t in prison should be free to own and carry guns, and anyone who is a danger to themselves or others, whether they be criminals or insane, should be carefully monitored at all times, because otherwise they *will* get weapons.)

If Tiffany’s segment was a professional baseball player, not only would it be batting 1.000, but every hit would be a home run. Outstanding interview this week!
